Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines pleased to announce that graduating forward Morgan Messenger has accepted a scholarship to York University (U SPORTS-OUA)
The Cape Sable Island, Nova Scotia product played two seasons with the Wolverines after being acquired from the Yarmouth Mariners (MHL) during training camp in 2014. In 110 career games with the Wolverines he registered 41 goals and 39 assists. Messenger was instrumental in the Wolverines run to the Alberta Junior Hockey League final this past spring finishing fifth in team playoff scoring while also being tasked with playing against the other team’s top lines.
This past season, Messenger set a career high in goals with 28 placing him second on the team during the regular season. His outstanding year finished with him being named the team’s most dedicated player at the year end awards ceremony where he also earned the Coaches Award. Messenger’s recognition also reached league wide as he was nominated for the AJHL’s Most Dedicated Player award.
Messenger’s junior hockey career saw him suit up for three different teams in the Canadian Junior Hockey League (Whitecourt Wolverines, Lloydminster Bobcats and Yarmouth Mariners) where he amassed 255 career games while scoring 104 goals and 104 assists. He also helped the Lloydminster Bobcats to the RBC Cup Final in 2016.
The York University Lions play in the Ontario University Athletics division of U SPORTS and are coming off winning their sixth divisional title after an 18-6-4 regular season. In addition to their six division championships the Lions have won three national championships (1985, 1988 and 1989). The team is guided by head coach Chris Dennis who joined the team in 2015 after spending 10 years working with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
