2014 AJHL Semi Annual Meeting

The 2014 Semi Annual Meeting of the Alberta Junior Hockey League Board of Governors was held on November 22nd in Red Deer, Alberta.    Representatives from the League’s 16 member teams participated in a full-day meeting, which included agenda items ranging from roster composition and player transactions to marketing initiatives and player safety.

Overall, the AJHL is experiencing significant success as the start of the 2014-2015 season has been positive and progressive.   The league reported increased sponsorship revenue and attendance figures, as well as significant growth in website traffic and AJHL Web TV viewership.

Notable decisions approved at the 2014 AJHL Semi Annual Meeting are listed below:

The Camrose Kodiaks will host the 2015 AJHL Showcase in Camrose, Alberta.  The 9th Annual Showcase will take place from October 1st – 3rd, 2015.  Details surrounding the event will be released over the coming months, including venues, scouting packages and volunteer opportunities.

“The Alberta Junior Hockey League Showcase has evolved into the premier event of the season capturing the attention of the North American Scouting Community while providing our athletes with an unprecedented opportunity. We are excited to transition the event to Camrose and are grateful to the community of Spruce Grove for its’ hospitality and dedication to the event.” 

The Alberta Junior Hockey League is reviewing the option to host Player Development Camps beginning in the Spring of 2015.  The camp format, locations and dates and budget are currently under final review and will be further evaluated in the immediate future.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are diligently preparing to host the 2015 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup from April 25th – May 3rd, 2015.   The champions of the British Columbia Hockey League, Alberta Junior Hockey League, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, and Manitoba Junior Hockey League will participate in a five-team tournament with the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons for the 2015 Western Canada Cup. The 13-game tournament will include a round-robin schedule followed by two semifinal games and a championship game. The Western Canada Cup Champion and the runner-up will both represent Western Canada at the 2015 RBC Cup National Junior A Championship.

The AJHL Board of Governors will be presented with alternate options for a regular season schedule format at the 2015 AJHL Annual General Meeting.  The options, including the status quo, would take effect in the 2016-2017 AJHL season.

The Alberta Junior Hockey League is currently operating under the direction of Chairman Greg Wood and Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk.  The AJHL Staff consists of George McCorry (Vice President, Officiating), Fran Gow (Vice President of Hockey Operations), Charla Flett (Vice-President, Communications), Dean Laschowski (Video Review Manager), Curtis Nichols (Supervisor of Officials), Ken Dentzien (Referee Assignor), and Bob Clark (Special Advisor). 

The 2015 AJHL Annual General Meeting will take place in Red Deer, Alberta on May 22nd & 23rd, 2015.
