The Alberta Junior Hockey League and Evolution Hockey are proud to announce the creation of a new scholarship for AJHL players – the Evolution Hockey Award for Perseverance and Dedication. A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded annually to a current AJHL player beginning in the Spring of 2014.
The Evolution Hockey Award for Perseverance and Dedication was developed to promote post-secondary education by assisting students currently playing in the AJHL. Eligible applicants must be committed to attend a post-secondary institution either in Canada or the United States for the following season, and have completed (or will be completing) at least one full season in the League.
”We are very excited about this partnership with the AJHL”, said Evolution Hockey owners Chad Shiel and Jay Blakley. “As alumni, the league holds a special place in our hearts and we feel that it is very important to support the AJHL and its players in their athletic and scholastic endeavours. We are extremely honored to sponsor this award and scholarship for the league, given the number of alumni, current and future AJHL players that currently participate in Evolution Hockey programs.”
Jay Blakley was a member of the Bonnyville Pontiacs in 1991-1992 and Chad Shiel played for the Calgary Royals, Crowsnest Pass Timberwolves and Grande Prairie Storm from 1997-2001.
Applicants will be required to provide two quality reference letters, and an essay outlining their qualifications for the award. The essay will describe the challenges the player has faced in their life and in hockey, and outline how these challenges have assisted the player in their pursuit of hockey and education.
