PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB (May 11, 2023) – Elliot Dutil and Ethan Beyer each had two goal games as the Brooks Bandits powered their way to a 7-2 win over the Yarmouth Mariners at Stride Place on opening day at the 2023 Centennial Cup.
Brooks (1-0) filled the net in the 1st period with four goals, while going 2/6 on the powerplay and 1/1 on the penalty kill, outshooting the Mariners 44-12. Ethan Barwick (St. Albert, AB) made 10 saves in the win.
Dutil (Montreal, QC) opened the scoring at 5:13 of the first period, backhanding a Caelan Fitzpatrick (Moose Jaw, SK) tipped shot to make it 1-0 Brooks. But Yarmouth tied the game at 13:00, as Nathan Kelly poked a rebound just past Barwick’s goal line. Dutil reclaimed the lead at 15:21, tapping a pass from Aiden Fink (Calgary, AB), who went end-to-end and fed a behind-the-net feed to Dutil, who scored shortside. With 43 seconds left in the period, Fink made it 3-1, cleaning up a rebound off a Fitzpatrick shot. But they weren’t done yet, as defenceman Ethan Beyer (Centennial, CO) took a Jordan Hughesman (Winnipeg, MB) pass and sniped a right circle shot at 19:46 to make it 4-1. Brooks outshot Yarmouth 18-3 in the 1st.
Beyer scored another snipe from the bottom of the right circle at 13:05 of the 2nd period, making it 5-1. The Mariners got one back at 14:25, as Michael Marquez scored from the slot after jumping on a loose puck in the slot after the Bandits blocked the initial shot.
Forward Hunter Wallace (Oak Lake, MB) one-timed a Hudson Malinoski (Saskatoon, SK) pass on the powerplay from the right circle at 6:02 of the 3rd period, making it 6-2. Forward Tyler Blocha (Bonnyville, AB) made it 7-2 at 13:17, shooting off the right post and in.
