EDMONTON, AB (September 21, 2020) ? The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced Brooks Bandits alumnus and Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar has been named the Calder Memorial Trophy winner as the league?s Rookie of the Year.
The Calgary, AB native adds the historic award to an already full trophy shelf following a stellar first season in the NHL. He becomes the first Brooks Bandit to win the award.
?Cale has done nothing but raise the bar since leaving our program 4 seasons ago. He has an uncanny ability to rise to the biggest moments, whether it?s the National Junior A Championship, World Junior Championship, Frozen Four or NHL Playoffs,” said Bandits Head Coach and GM, Ryan Papaioannou.
“As an organization we were incredibly proud when Cale was awarded the Hobey Baker in his final season at the University of Massachusetts. It was tough to see an individual award of higher standing that Cale could achieve and as always, Cale raised the bar. His nomination for the Calder Trophy is a feat in itself, winning is incredible. We couldn?t be more happy for Cale and his Family. Our bond to the Makar’s stays strong as younger brother Taylor is now staring here with the team. We are all looking forward to watching Cale progress and dominate again next season.”
