Canmore Eagles forward Colton Young has been selected as the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week for the second time this season. Young collected 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) for the Eagles last week, extending his current point streak to five games and 16 points.
Young (Calgary, AB) was also awarded as the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game twice during the week of February 19th-25th, adding to his total of ten Star of the Game selections.
Colton opened the week on Family Day with 3 assists, including an assist on brother Alex’s game winning goal, in a 4-3 win over the Calgary Mustangs. His first Star of the Game selection followed an 8-7 win over the Canucks on Friday night and a 4-point performance by Young with 2 goals and 2 assists, which again included an assist on the game winner. The week concluded with a 5-4 loss versus the Olds Grizzlys, but another 4-point game (1G, 3A) for Young and his second Star of the Game award.
This is Young’s second full season with the Eagles. The 19 year-old leads the team in scoring and is 8th overall in the AJHL Soring Race with 21 goals, 45 assists and 66 points.
The Canmore Eagles hold the final playoff spot in the Viterra AJHL South Division with two regular season games remaining.
Team Captain Andrew Kartusch of the Drumheller Dragons is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. With 5 points (2 goals, 3 assists) in three games played, the Dragons defenceman extended his point streak to 5 games and 7 points.
Kartusch, 20, recorded a goal in a 4-2 loss to the Brooks Bandits on Monday, which would be the team’s only loss of the week. The Dragons went on to defeat the North Division leading Saints 3-2 on Friday night with the game winner coming from Andrew Kartusch. Saturday night saw the Dragons triumph over the Drayton Valley Thunder with a 9-2 win and 2 assists for Kartusch.
The third-year Dragons defenceman from Red Deer, AB is having a career-high season with 40 points (13G, 27A), 6th overall among all AJHL defencemen in scoring.
The Dragons have secured home ice advantage in the opening round of the 2018 Inter Pipeline AJHL Playoffs as the third placed team in the Viterra AJHL South Division.
