Alex Young, 18, earned an assist on both Canmore goals in a 5-2 loss to the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Friday night. For the third time in his AJHL career, Young recorded a 5-point game and led the Eagles to a 6-4 victory over the Grande Prairie Storm on Sunday.
The third-year Eagles forward leads the team in scoring with 5 goals, 11 assists and 16 points. Young (Calgary, AB) is committed to Colgate University.
The Eagles will conclude a four-game homestand in Banff, AB on Friday night before returning to the Canmore Recreation Centre for their home opener.
Defenceman Michael Benning is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. Benning added 5 points (2G, 3A) and extended his point streak to six games last week.
The Crusaders began a three-game road trip through the South Division on Friday with a 5-2 win over the Canmore Eagles. Benning (St. Albert, AB) scored a goal and an assist in the win. On Saturday, he was awarded as Viterra Star of the Game after opening the scoring for the Crusaders with his second goal of the weekend. The Crusaders fell 3-2 to the Okotoks Oilers on Saturday and saw an 8-game season opening win streak come to and end. The road trip concluded on Sunday with a 7-2 win in Olds and two more assists for Benning.
The 17 year-old defenceman leads all AJH d-men in scoring with 15 points (3G, 12A) in 10 games. Earlier today, Benning was identified on the NHL Central Scouting Players to Watch List ahead of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.
