The Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week is forward Connor Lyons of the Canmore Eagles. With 8 points (4G, 4A) in four games played from October 14th-20th, Lyons led the Eagles through a North Division road trip.
Lyons (Lethbridge, AB) added an assist to both Eagles goals in a 4-2 loss to the Calgary Canucks on October 15th before the team headed North on a three-game road trip. Canmore fell 5-2 on Friday night in Drayton Valley with Lyons recording both Eagle goals. The team rebounded with a 6-2 win in Grande Prairie on Saturday when Connor scored a goal and added 2 assists. Lyons kept his four-game point streak alive with the lone goal in a 4-1 loss to Whitecourt on Sunday to conclude the road trip. Lyons picked up his second Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award in Sunday?s match up.
Connor Lyons, 20, is in his third season with the Eagles and is second in team scoring with 11 goals, 11 assists and 22 points. He is currently averaging 1.6 points per game.
Okotoks Oilers goaltender Ashton Abel is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. Abel has a perfect 11-0 record to start the 2019-20 AJHL regular season after adding three additional wins and a shutout last week.
Ashton recorded his second shutout of the season in an 8-0 victory over the Lloydminster Bobcats on Tuesday night. He earned the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game on Friday after turning away 41 of 43 shots on goal in Grande Prairie to take a 3-2 win. Abel?s eleventh win of the season came Sunday with a 3-1 score in Drayton Valley.
Abel leads all AJHL goaltenders with a 1.59 GAA and .927 SV%. The 19 year-old from Fort McMurray, AB is in his third AJHL season, joining the Oilers from the Calgary Mustangs in the off-season.
