Confidence key to goals for Nanooks’ freshman center

FAIRBANKS — An international hockey tournament gave Cody Kunyk confidence, and it’s benefitting the Alaska Nanooks this season.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound freshman center from Sherwood Park, Alberta, is in a four-way tie for third in team scoring for the 15th-ranked Nanooks, who play host to a Central Collegiate Hockey Association series against Bowling Green at 7:05 p.m., Friday and Saturday at the Carslon Center.

His three goals also tie senior left wing and team captain Kevin Petovello for Alaska’s lead, and the two have accounted for half of the Nanooks’ 12 goals so far this season.

The 2009-10 RBC Canadian Junior Hockey League Player of the Year honoree and fifth-leading last season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League had expectations for himself entering his rookie campaign of college hockey.
