DANIELSON, WEISS AND GURKAN NAMED AJHL WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS

The Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week is Drumheller Dragons forward Noah Danielson.  Through the week of January 16th-22nd, Noah led all AJHL skaters with nine points (7G, 2A), including a hat trick, and earned the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award three times.

Noah Danielson (Red Deer, AB) recorded three multi-point games last week and extended his point streak to six games.  On January 17th, he scored both of Drumheller’s goals in a 3-2 OT loss to the Blackfalds Bulldogs.  Noah had another two-goal game and added an assist on January 20th as the Dragons defeated the host Drayton Valley Thunder 6-4.

Danielson’s third consecutive multi-point game came as a hat trick on January 21st when Drumheller posted a 9-1 victory over the Grande Prairie Storm.  The 2002-born Dragon scored his fourth game winning goal of the season and picked up his third Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award in as many games.  The Dragons wrapped up a three-game North Division road trip with a 7-5 win in Whitecourt on January 22nd and Danielson added his 19th assist of the year.

Goaltender Bodee Weiss is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week with a 2-0 record and a shutout for his Bonnyville Pontiacs.

Bodee Weiss (Medicine Hat, AB) shutdown the North Division leading Spruce Grove Saints on January 20th with 1-0 OT win.  The 2004 goalie made 22 saves in the victory and earned the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award.  On January 21st, Weiss and the Pontiacs celebrated Justin Fontaine Jersey Retirement Night with an 8-2 defeat of the Saints.  In total, he turned away 44 of 46 shots on goal from the high-powered Saints.

In his second season with the Pontiacs, Weiss is tied for third most wins in the AJHL with 18 and has played the second most games of all goaltenders.

Blackfalds Bulldogs forward Kurt Gurkan is the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week after scoring four goals and five points in three games versus South Division rivals.

Gurkan (2004) scored the Bulldogs two regulation goals in a 3-2 OT win over the Drumheller Dragons on January 17th.  Kurt was awarded as the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award on January 20th for his two-goal performance in a 6-3 win against the division leading Brooks Bandits.  The week concluded with a 6-5 win over the Calgary Canucks to extend the Bulldogs win streak to five games.  With an assist in the victory, Gurkan’s active point streak is at four games and seven points.
