Forward Luke Fennig of the Drumheller Dragons is the Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week for November 15th – 21st, 2021. The third-year Dragon scored five goals and three assists over three games last week and leads his team in scoring with 24 points (12G, 12A).
Luke Fennig (Battleford, SK) opened the scoring with a short-handed goal on November 17th versus the Olds Grizzlys, recording his first of two goals in the game and the eventual game winner. The Dragons would go on to shutout the Grizzlys 6-0 as Fennig picked up the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award for a three-point (2G, 1A) performance.
On November 19th, the 20 year-old recorded two assists in a 6-2 win against the Lloydminster Bobcats. Fennig was once again selected as the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game on November 21st when he recorded his first AJHL hat trick and his fourth game winning goal of the season in a 7-3 victory against the Canmore Eagles.
The Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week is Dragon teammate Ty Daneault, who led all rookies in scoring last week with four goals and seven points. The 16 year-old forward is on a six-game point streak totaling 11 points.
Daneault (Red Deer, AB) marked an assist on Fennig’s short-handed game winner versus the Olds Grizzlys on November 17th and scored his first of two powerplay goals over the week. On November 19th, Ty scored his first AJHL hat trick, including a powerplay goal, with two of the goals assisted by Player of the Week Luke Fennig in a 6-2 win versus Lloydminster. Daneault returned the favour on November 21st with two assists on Fennig’s hat trick in a convincing 7-3 decision over Canmore.
The Merrimack College (NCAA Division I) commit has 19 points (9G, 10A) over 23 games in his first season with the Dragons.
For the second time in November 2021, the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week is Fort McMurray Oil Barons Captain Taige Harding. The Chicago Blackhawks draft pick scored two game winning goals and four points (2G, 2A) as the Oil Barons picked up three wins versus North Division rivals.
Harding (St Albert, AB) and the MOB defence allowed just two goals against in three games last week. On November 17th, Harding added an assist on the Oil Barons opening goal versus the Sherwood Park Crusaders then scored the second of the game, which would be the game winner is a 5-1 decision. On November 19th, Harding scored a powerplay goal for his second game winning goal of the week and added an assist in a 3-1 win over the Whitecourt Wolverines. Taige was held off the scoresheet on November 20th for the first time since October 24th, ending a 10-game point streak.
Taige Harding, 19, is committed to Providence College (NCAA Division I). The third-year Oil Baron defenceman is second in team scoring with 26 points (8G, 18A).
The Dragons and Oil Barons are both enjoying five-game win streaks and sit second in their respective divisions.
