A former NHLer and Drayton Valley Thunder alumni is returning to the Omniplex this upcoming season, however, this time he’ll be helping to coach the team.
The Thunder have announced that they have hired Darren Reid as assistant coach.
Reid played with the Thunder for three seasons from 1999 – 2002 before going on to play in the NHL for both the Philadelphia Flyers and Tampa Bay Lightning, accumulating 21 games in total with both teams.
He also has years of experience within the AJHL, WHL, ECHL and AHL, bouncing around on the rosters of the Medicine Hat Tigers,Springfield Falcons, Philadelphia Phantoms, Hershey Bears, Reading Royals and the South Carolina Stingrays.
Reid said he is very excited to be joining the team under the role of assistant coach, adding it’s a stepping stone to a bigger goal of his.
“I want to be a Head Coach some day and I am thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to develop my coaching skills,” said Reid.
Reid will be starting his new role on August 8.
