For all the firepower the Brooks Bandits have demonstrated this season, it was their goalie Michael Fredrick who stole the show in Game 7 of their epic series with the Okotoks Oilers.
The 19-year-old made 32 saves — including 12 in the final frame — and dodged a Chris Collins shot off the post in the late stages Tuesday as Brooks shaded Okotoks 2-1 to advance to the Alberta Junior Hockey League final versus Spruce Grove, starting Friday in Brooks.
“He was our best player. He was unbelievable,” said Brooks head coach Ryan Papaioannou, who described the mood in the Bandits’ room as equal parts excitement and relief after coming out on top in a barnburner of a series.
“Okotoks gave us everything we could handle. In a lot of parts of the series, they outplayed us.”
