Kunyk Named CCHA’s Offensive Player of the Week

Junior center Cody Kunyk has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's Postgame Offensive Player of the Week following his four-point weekend in Big Rapids, Mich., where the Alaska Nanooks split their league-opening series with the #18 Ferris State Bulldogs.

Kunyk tallied a pair of assists in the Nanooks 6-3 loss on Friday night before adding a goal and an assist in Saturday's 3-2 win.

Friday he helped set up each of his linemates for their first goals of the season, as junior Colton Beck buried the puck on a power-play attempt at 14:03 of the first period to double Alaska's lead at that point in the game. He garnered a second helper on senior Andy Taranto's strike later that period, which made it 3-2 for Alaska at 19:34.

On Saturday, his linemates returned the favor dishing the puck to him for his second tally of the season at 12:47 of the second period to tie the game 1-1. He set Beck up for his second goal of the weekend midway through the third stanza to give the Nanooks a 2-1 lead at 9:07.

With his two-point efforts the third-year Nanook recorded his 14th and 15th career multi-point games in becoming the team leader for points on the young season with two goals and four assists in six games. The four-point weekend also moved his career totals to 29-39–68 in 80 games.

Alaska host the Lake Superior State Lakers this weekend at the Carlson Center for their league home-opener. The teams meet at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
