Whitecourt, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines are pleased to announce that graduating forward Mitch Lipon has accepted a scholarship to Mount Royal University (U SPORTS-CWUAA).
The Regina, Saskatchewan product joined the Wolverines just prior to the start of training camp ahead of the 2016-2017 campaign and would go on to lead the team in scoring during the regular season accumulating 25 goals and 48 assists. His 73 points ranks as the fourth best point total in a single season by a Wolverine player in franchise history.
Lipon was an integral part of helping the Wolverines to their first North Division championship as he added three goals and 12 assists during this spring’s playoff run to the league final, finishing third on the team in post-season scoring.
The Mount Royal University Cougars just completed their fifth season as a member of U SPORTS (formally CIS). They finished in fourth place in the Canada West Conference compiling a record of 15-11-2.
The Cougars are lead by head coach Bert Gilling who will be entering his fourth season behind the team’s bench. He joined the Cougars after being a long-time assistant coach with Bemidji State University (NCAA) following the conclusion of his collegiate hockey career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Under Gilling, the Cougars have become a perennial contender in the always competitive Canada West Conference.
The entire Whitecourt Wolverines organization would like to congratulate Mitch and his family on his selection of Mount Royal University for his college experience and wish him all the best in his academics and athletics.
