Mike Marianchuk is the new captain of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
The 20-year-old forward — the only remaining 1992-born player on the team — will wear the ‘C’ the remainder of the season.
The MOB’s captaincy was vacated last week after Brock Maschmeyer was traded to the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL.
Marianchuk has served as an alternate captain for the Barons in the last two seasons.
“Mike is one of those guys that does everything leadership-wise,” said Oil Barons head coach Gord Thibodeau.
“He really leads by example. He’s in the weight room, he does his on-ice work, off-ice work and he’s very easy to get along with. I think for this young group, it’s nice to have a captain that’s an easy-going guy that they feel they can talk to.
“Mike has been a ‘glue’ member for us for the last couple of years and it was an obvious choice that he would carry the ‘C’.”
