Players interested in the skilled trades to have access to dedicated scholarships
EDMONTON, AB ? Merit Contractors Association is proud to announce their sponsorship of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 hockey seasons. A key component to this agreement is the introduction of the Merit Scholarship that will be presented to two current or former AJHL players whose studies focus on the skilled trades.
?Hockey has strong ties to the communities where our members live, work and play,? said Malcolm D. Kirkland, President of Merit Contractors Association. ?We want to ensure the players have every opportunity afforded to them,? said Mr. Kirkland. ?The introduction of the Merit Scholarship can open doors for the players as they continue to develop their skills on and off the ice. We know there will be a shortage of skilled trades workers as demographics shift with the retirement of the boomer generation. This scholarship is a great opportunity to develop a new skill set off the ice and carry into the future.?
?Our sponsorship agreement with Merit Contractors Association is a win for the AJHL and its? players,? said Ryan Bartoshyk, Commissioner of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. ?The newly created Merit Scholarship provides our players with an opportunity to explore a career after hockey.?
Merit invests generously in Alberta?s communities through awards, scholarships and grants. In just the past 10 years, Merit has provided more than $20 million in tuition refunds and other educational funding supports.
