Coming in to the 2015 Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup, all it seemed the Fort McMurray Oil Barons needed was a spark.
Saturday night at the Casman Centre, they received that spark in a big way as Isaac Ceh’s third period goal lifted the MOB to a 3-1 victory over the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Portage Terriers in the opening game of the tournament for both teams.
Ceh’s goal — which came on his birthday — was complimented by goals from Landon Welykholowa and Trent Lofthouse as well as 28 saves from Zach Fortin in a game that saw the MOB change their tone of play for the better when it mattered.
“I thought we protected the middle, we limited second opportunities and then we just chipped and chased,” MOB head coach Curtis Hunt said.
“We knew they were deep. For our group, it’s just a matter of believing that you belong here and our group (has) worked really hard up to this point and they stuck to the plan.”
