Player of the Week Awards for Hughes, Acheson and Marcellus

The Inter Pipeline AJHL Player of the Week is TJ Hughes of the Brooks Bandits.   In three games last week, the 19 year-old forward scored 5 goals and 8 points to aid in extending the Bandits 10-game win streak.

Hughes (Hamilton, ON) posted his third 4-point game of the season on Friday night in a 7-4 win versus the Olds Grizzlys with a goal and 3 assists.  On Saturday and Sunday, the Bandits defeated the Grizzlys by scores of 6-1 and 5-1 respectively, with Hughes scoring two goals in each victory.   He also received the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game in Sunday’s win for the fourth time in the 2020-21 season.

The Robert Morris University (NCAA Div I) commit leads the Bandits in scoring and is second overall in the AJHL with 28 points (14G, 14A) and an impactful 1.6 points per game average.

Defenceman Logan Acheson of the Spruce Grove Saints is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. The 19 year-old from Edmonton, AB leads all AJHL defencemen with 17 points and is tied with teammate Graham Gamache as the team scoring leader.

In two games versus the Drayton Valley Thunder, Acheson recorded 5 assists, including two on Friday night in an 8-0 shutout.   On Saturday night, the Saints fell 7-4 to the Thunder with Acheson marking an assist on three of the four Spruce Grove goals.

The Saints will face the Bandits in a three-game weekend to conclude the 2020-21 AJHL Season from May 7th-9th in Brooks, AB.

Mason Marcellus of the Drayton Valley Thunder has earned the honour of Merit Contractors AJHL Rookie of the Week for a third time this season and second consecutive week.  

Marcellus added 5 points (1G, 4A) to his point total in a 7-4 victory over the Saints on Saturday, May 1st and was selected as the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game for a fourth time this season.   Marcellus finishes the 2020-21 season as the team’s leading scorer with 22 points (6G, 16A) and currently leads all AJHL rookies.   The 18 year-old forward is also tied for 5th in the AJHL Scoring Race as the League enters the final weekend of game play.

Mason Marcellus (Ottawa, ON) has committed to the University of Alaska Fairbanks of the NCAA Division I for the 2022-23 season.
