Puck Set to Drop on Barons camp

After a little over five months since their 2012-13 AJHL season ended, the Fort McMurray Oil Barons are set to drop the puck on their training camp ahead of the 2013-14 season.

The Oil Barons will open their camp on Friday at the Casman Centre at 7 p.m. with two training sessions, followed by the team’s first exhibition game Saturday against the Notre Dame Hounds of the SJHL.

With a short camp ahead of him, head coach and general manager Gord Thibodeau will be on the lookout for players who make themselves noticed at camp for the right reasons.

“There’s roughly going to be 38 kids at camp,” he said. “Right from the start we’re trying to get into a fair amount of system work and practice. We’re looking for tempo, looking for guys that can skate, looking for guys that can think and guys that want to play junior hockey. We’ve got a lot of veterans here but we want to see what rookies want to compete for spots against some of those veterans.”

Sessions will also take place on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a session at 5 p.m. for the players not participating in the game. Sunday’s session will take place in the morning from 9 a.m. until noon.
