Ron Meyers Names Alaska Nanooks’ Team Captain

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Alaska Nanooks’ fourth year head coach Dallas Ferguson announced that senior forward Ron Meyers has been selected as the program’s team captain for the 2011-12 season on Friday night at the Face-Off Club banquet.

The announcement was also made that senior defensemen Aaron Gens and Cody Butcher and junior right wing Andy Taranto will don “A’s” on their jerseys as assistant captains.

The 2009-10 season’s Fan’s Choice Award has been a stalwart on the Nanooks grinder line since he laced up his skates as a rookie for Alaska. Last season he tallied a goal and seven assists bringing his career totals to 12-17–29 in 110 career games for the blue and gold and has seen significant time on Alaska’s penalty kill, a role that has helped propell it to one of the best in the Nation year-after-year under Ferguson’s guidance.

A leader off the ice, Meyers captured two of the team’s preseason fitness testing awards earlier this montth. He was a finalist for the Hockey Humanitarian award last season and went on to be named the atheltic department’s Bart Lebon Humanitarian of the Year.
