Saints Defeat Terriers in OT at Western Canada Cup

Spruce Grove Saints (1-2) vs. Yorkton Terriers (1-2)

The Saints had their backs against wall this afternoon as they took on the Yorkton Terriers this afternoon.

The AJHL champions needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive and that’s exactly what they did picking up a 3-2 win in overtime.

The Terriers struck first midway through the first period (9:25) when Brett Boehm (unassisted) broke in on a 2 on 1 and hammered a shot past Saints’ goaltender Kenny Cameron.

Spruce Grove would answer back on the power play as Parker Mackay (assists to Cameron Hughes and Carson Samoridny) wristed a shot behind Terriers’ goaltender Kale Thompson at 17:09 of the first period.

The Terriers shots were even 9-9 in the opening period.

Yorkton restored their one goal lead early in the second period as Tyler Giebel (assists to Devon McMullen and Kailum Gervais) tipped a point shot past Cameron and into the net to make it 2-1 just 3:02 into the period.

The back and forth game continued as the Saints would once again tie the game on the power play. Cameron Hughes (unassisted) banged in his own rebound past Thompson at 11:35 of the second period.

Spruce Grove outshot Yorkton 14-13 in the middle period and 23-22 after two periods.

The Saints dominated the first half of the period and the Terriers dominated the second half of the period but neither team was able to score, sending the game to overtime.

Shots favored the Saints 13-12 in the third period and 36-34 after regulation.

Carson Samoridny’s (assists to Tyler Busch and Corey Chorneyko) second of the afternoon ended the game in overtime on the power play as he snapped a one timer over Thompson at 7:13.

The Saints will finish off the round robin on Thursday afternoon against the Winnipeg Blues, puck drop at 1:00pm.
