Saints Force Game 7 with Win Over Oil Barons

Fort McMurray vs. Spruce Grove (series tied 3-3)

The Spruce Grove Saints and Fort McMurray Oil Barons will play game seven for the second consecutive series in this year’s post season, after the Saints earned a 5-1 victory on Sunday night.

Fort McMurray came out with a ton of pressure but they were unable to beat Saints’ goaltender Kenny Cameron.

The Saints would open the scoring on the power play as Parker Mackay (assist to Corey Chorneyko) pounced on a rebound and beat Oil Barons’ goaltender Tanner Jaillet to make it 1-0 at 9:35.

Just 48 seconds later the Saints added to their lead as Nathan Smith (assists to Tristan Sieben and Tyler Busch) took two whacks at the puck before being able to make 2-0 at 10:23.

The Saints outshot the Oil Barons 19-14 in the opening period.

In the second, the Saints would catch a huge break as Parker Mackay (assist to Cameron Hughes) would get his second of the night when he put a shot on net and the rebound went off Oil Baron defenseman Austin Yadlowski’s skate and into the net to make it 3-0 Saints at 9:57.

The Saints would get a five on three power play late in the period and Carson Samoridny (assist to Cameron Hughes) ripped a shot from the point and beat Jaillet at 19:54 to make it 4-0 Saints.

Shots favored the Saints 17-2 in the second period and 36-16 through two periods.

The Oil Barons would make a goaltending change to start the third period as Jesse Gordichuk would come in to replace Tanner Jaillet.

Oil Barons forward, Mitch Vanderlaan would get a penalty shot at 2:33 of the third period, but Cameron would stop him with the blocker.

The Oil Barons would get on the board in the third period as Kevin Miller (assist to Louis Joseph Sawyer) was left alone at the side of the net and beat Saints’ goaltender Kenny Cameron at 11:33.

The Saints would score a late goal as Carson Samoridny (assists to Jake Mykitiuk and Colton Leiter) would tap the puck behind Oil Barons’ backup goaltender Jesse Gordichuk at 19:26.

The Saints outshot the Oil Barons 14-7 in the third period and 50-23 in the hockey game.

Game seven will be Tuesday night in Spruce Grove.
