Saints Take 2-0 Series Lead Over Dragons

Gas Drive Cup Finals Game #2 Spruce Grove Saints vs. Drumheller Dragons (Saints lead 2-0)

The Spruce Grove Saints dominated game two, hammering the Drumheller Dragons 6-1 on Saturday night.

The Saints would open the scoring at 6:38 of the first period, as Tristan Sieben (assist to Tyler Busch) scored on the rebound after Dragons’ goaltender Devin Buffalo made the first save.

The Saints would add to the lead as Nathan Smith (assist to Austin Hunter) banged the rebound behind Buffalo to make it 2-0 at 12:42 of the opening period.

The Dragons would then make a goaltending change as Curtis Skip would come on to replace Devin Buffalo.
Shots favored the Saints 16-10 in the first period.

Both teams went 0/1 on the power play in the opening period.

In the second period the Saints would add to the lead on the power play as Corey Chorneyko (assists to Cameron Hughes and Tyler Busch) wacked the puck behind Dragons’ goaltender Curtis Skip to make it 3-0 at 8:04.

The Dragons would cut into the lead as Hunter Mills (assist to Christopher Rauckman) shot bounced off a couple of bodies and into the net behind Saints’ goaltender Kenny Cameron at 12:33.

The Saints would get that goal back at the 18 minute mark of the second period as Jarid Hauptman (assists to Riley Simpson and Cory Chorneyko) finished off a two on one breakaway to make it 4-1.

Shots favored the Dragons 11-8 in the period, but it was the Saints who were out shooting the Dragons 24-21 after two periods.
The Saints went 1/2 on the power play in the second period and were 1/3 after 40 minutes.

The Dragons went 1/4 on the power play in the second and were 1/5 after 40 minutes.

The Saints power play would go to work in the third period as Dylan Hollman (assist to Jarid Hauptman) beat Skip over his blocker at 9:09.

Later in the third period the Saints added to their lead as Paul Lovsin (unassisted) scored yet another power play goal, this time beating Skip to the glove side to make it 6-1 Saints at 18:10.

The Saints outshot the Dragons 10-3 in the third period and 34-24 in the hockey game.

The Saints would go 2/7 on the power play in the third period and 3/10 in the game.

The Dragons went 0/1 in the third period and 1/6 in the hockey game.

Game three of the series will be Monday night in Drumheller.
