Steel Announce New Assistant Coaches

The St. Albert Steel is proud to announce that Wes Werhun and Donovan Sugiyama will join the team as Assistant Coaches for the 2011 – 12 season.

As a long time resident and former assistant captain of the St. Albert Saints, Wes Werhun knows St. Albert and Junior A Hockey all too well. Retiring from the AJHL in 1984 left big impressions as he returned to the Saints in 2001 as their Player Development Coach, spending three years with team. Werhun, has spent the past seven years coaching with the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club. Most recently, Wes was appointed as Head Coach to the St. Albert Merchants.

“I have a passion for hockey, wanting to share my knowledge and experiences with the players. I understand what it takes to be a player.” Wes Werhun says about his new position, “A player’s success is earned, not given.”

Donovan Sugiyama comes to us from the St. Albert Midget AA Blues, as Head Coach where he led them to provincials last season. Sugiyama, the Edmonton native, is no stranger to Junior A Hockey, having played for both the BCHL and the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL, earning a scholarship to the Concordia University College of Alberta where he completed a Bachelor of Management Degree.

“We are very excited to welcome Wes and Donovan to the team, “says Greg Parks, Steel Head Coach / General Manager. “We look forward to adding their talent and having a great 2011-2012 season!”
