On the ice the Drayton Valley Thunder faced off against several teams during AJHL Showcase last week, but off the ice they came head to head with students from Grade 2 to 6 at Evergreen Elementary in Drayton Valley on Sept. 28.
“The Ronald’s Readers program is about two things,” says Brandy Robinson, Aim for Success mentor at Evergreen Elementary. “The first is building literacy with kids by giving them that opportunity to read, something they might not always get to do as much as they’d like. The second part of it is that mentor and community building, so by using the Thunder players, them being youth in the community but still older than the kids, the kids are looking at that as a mentorship and the guys are really good at interacting with the kids and building that relationship with them.”
