The Spruce Grove Saints are proud to announce that twenty-year-old defensemen Evan Wood has committed to Concordia University Thunder for the upcoming 2019-2020 season. Wood will suit up for the Thunder hockey program, located in Edmonton, who compete in the Alberta College Athletic Conference (ACAC).

Before embarking on his college career, Wood is currently completing a 3-year AJHL career that started with the Lloydminster Bobcats and in the process of finishing with the Saints after being acquired from the Bobcats in November of 2018.

In 30 regular season games played with the Saints this season, Wood compiled 2 goals and 5 assists accompanied with 80 pims. Adding to his career AJHL numbers which include 142 games played, 3 goals, 20 assists and 284 penalty minutes.

Concordia Thunder Head Coach Dan Glegloff was thrilled to nab a local high-quality player in Wood.  “We are excited to have Evan join our team. Evan is excellent defenceman that moves the puck well and is hard to play against in his own zone. Evan comes from a winning program in Spruce Grove and his leadership attributes and commitment to academics will contribute to the positive culture in our Athletics Department,” finished Glegloff.

The 6’3”, 190 lbs defenseman has been a valuable shut down defender for the Saints this season adding a competitive edge while eating up tough minutes on the back end while the team experienced many long-term injuries on the back end this season.

Saints Head Coach Bram Stephen is happy to see another Saint gain an opportunity to continue his academic and athletic career.  “Evan has come in and continued to show an appetite to learn and grow his game to get an opportunity to play at a higher level. Concordia presents a great opportunity for him to do that and play meaningful minutes for a team on the rise in the ACAC,” Stephen continued.

“We are excited to see Woody (Evan) advance his career in hockey while pursuing a university education. The Saints wish him nothing but the best and look forward to following his career as a member of the Thunder.”

The Spruce Grove Saints would like to congratulate Evan and his family on his great achievement.

The Saints open up the second round of playoffs on the road this weekend Friday and Saturday against Bonnyville before returning home to Spruce Grove on Monday and Tuesday, March 18th and 19th for games 3 and 4. Both games at 7 pm.
