The Alberta Junior Hockey League has appointed Colin Watt of Edmonton, AB as Vice-President of Officials effective immediately. Colin will oversee the AJHL officiating program, including recruitment, development and supervision of game officials, and serve as an executive member of the on-ice discipline and player safety committee.
“On behalf of the AJHL Board of Governors, I would like to welcome Colin to our team and look forward to his contributions to our League,” said AJHL Commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk. “Colin has excellent relationships with all levels of officials and key stakeholders under the Hockey Canada umbrella and significant experience in the AJHL, WHL & USports.”
Colin joins the League Office after refereeing 15 years in the AJHL and ten years in the Western Hockey League (WHL). On the ice, he was selected to referee several league finals, inter-league playdowns, as well as multiple National Championships at both the Junior A & USports levels. He has also been involved in the development of officials for Hockey Alberta, having mentored many of the province’s top officials and assisting them in reaching their on-ice goals.
Colin Watt takes over the role from Curtis Nichols who retired from the position at the completion of the 2023-24 AJHL season. The Alberta Junior Hockey League saw tremendous growth in its officiating program under Nichols and is confident it will continue to develop under Colin’s professionalism and guidance.
