Rookie Ben Sanderson of the Okotoks Oilers is the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week for December 4th – 10th, 2017. The 17 year-old forward scored 4 goals and 2 assists in three victories for the team.
Ben Sanderson (Calgary, AB) contributed to the game winning goal in each of the three Oiler wins last week. On Tuesday, December 5th, he scored 2 goals, including the game winner, and picked up the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award in a 6-2 win over Canmore. On Friday, Ben scored 1 goal and 2 assists in an 8-3 win against the Drayton Valley Thunder, with an assist on the game winning goal. Sanderson then scored a short-handed goal, which would end up as the game winner, in a 4-1 defeat of the Spruce Grove Saints on Saturday.
Goaltender Mitchel Benson of the Brooks Bandits is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week for a second time in the 2017-2018 season. Benson was a perfect 3-0 over three games with a shutout victory and a 1.00 GAA.
Mitchel Benson backstopped the Bandits to two wins over the Olds Grizzlys, with an 8-1 win on Tuesday, December 5th and an 8-2 victory on Saturday, December 9th. He also recorded his league leading 4th shutout on Friday with a 3-0 victory over the Calgary Canucks. Benson has recorded the most wins of all AJHL goaltenders (22) and is among the Top 6 with a 2.43 GAA. He has won his last 6 starts, which coincides with the Bandits current 6 game win streak.
Mitchel Benson, 20, recently committed to Colgate University (NCAA Division I). The 20 year-old from Windsor, ON is in his second season with the Bandits.
