The Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week is forward Jeremy Klessens of the Drayton Valley Thunder. Klessens accumulated 9 points (2G, 7A) in two games during the week of February 11th – 17th and was rewarded with his fourth Viterra AJHL Star of the Game Award.
Jeremy Klessens (Red Deer County, AB) started the week with a 7-point game in an 8-3 win over Whitecourt on Friday night. He scored 1 goal and 6 assists, including an assist on the game winner, and earned the honour of Viterra Star of the Game. On Saturday, Klessens added a goal and an assist in a 5-2 win against Lloydminster.
The 20 year-old alternate captain is in his fourth AJHL season and leads the Thunder in scoring with 53 points (22G, 31A). He is 10th overall among the Viterra AJHL North Division scoring leaders.
The Drayton Valley Thunder are sixth in the North with four games remaining and have secured a spot in the 2019 Inter Pipeline AJHL Playoffs.
For the second time in February, defenceman Brandon Scanlin has been selected as the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. The Brooks Bandits blueliner had 4 points in two games last week, scored a game winning goal, and received a Viterra AJHL Star of the Game Award. Scanlin has recorded points in eleven of his last twelve games.
Scanlin, 19, scored the game winning goal and added two assists in a 5-2 victory versus Camrose on Friday night to earn his fourth Viterra AJHL Star of the Game selection. Scanlin leads all AJHL defencemen in game winning goals with 4 in the regular season. He followed up with an assist in a 4-2 win over Olds on Saturday night to push his point total to 39 (16G, 23A), which places him 8th overall among AJHL defencemen.
The second year Bandit is committed to Nebraska Omaha of the NCAA Division I. Scanlin was also awarded as the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week for the week of January 28th – February 3rd, 2019.
The Brooks Bandits (53-3) became the first AJHL team since 1977 to win 28 straight home games, the second to ever win 53 games in a season, and the first to win 29 straight games, with a 3-1 home win over the Calgary Mustangs on Monday afternoon. The Bandits maintained their ranking as number one in the latest Canadian Junior Hockey League Top 20 Rankings and have clinched first in the Viterra AJHL South Division.
