Grande Prairie Storm defenceman Matthew Gillard is the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week and teammate Logan Cunningham is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week.
Gillard (2005) led the AJHL with four points from November 25th – December 1st, 2024 while Storm Captain Logan Cunningham (2004) recorded a three-point week. The two Yellowknife, NWT defencemen have led the Storm backend to the fewest goals against (57) in the AJHL thus far and a tie for first place in the Viterra AJHL North Division.
On November 29th, Gillard recorded an assist on both Grande Prairie goals in a 3-2 loss to the Lloydminster Bobcats. Cunningham scored a goal and added an assist in the game. The Storm battled to a 4-3 loss to the Bonnyville Pontiacs the next night with Gillard again picking up two assists and Cunningham adding another. Gillard was selected as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game.
Gillard is in his first AJHL season and has recorded five points in his last three games. Cunningham is in his third campaign with the Storm and is second among all AJHL defencemen with 18 points (4G, 14A) in 22 games played.
The Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week is forward Liam Payne of the Camrose Kodiaks. Payne is averaging a point per game in his rookie season after posting three points (2G, 1A) in two games last week.
Liam Payne (2006) scored a goal on November 29th in a 6-2 road win over the Olds Grizzlys. On November 30th, he opened the scoring for the Kodiaks and added an assist on the second goal of the game to earn the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game award. The Kodiaks fell short with a 7-3 loss to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
Payne is in the Top 20 of all AJHL Rookies with 13 points (7G, 6A) in 13 games played. The Kodiaks are 6-3-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) in their last ten games and are in a tight race for the top of the Viterra AJHL South Division.
