The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are pleased to announce that 20 year old defenceman Sam Higgins (Calgary, AB) has committed to attend and play for the St. Norbert Green Knights (NCAA Div. III) in the upcoming 2011-2012 hockey season. The Green Knights play in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) and are the 2010-2011 NCAA Div. III National Champions.
Sam was acquired during his final year of junior eligibility and had an immediate impact on the team. In 28 regular season games, he tallied 12 points, while manning the blue line for the Oil Barons. Sam elevated his game greatly in the playoffs where he posted 4 goals and 7 assists in 13 games. Due to his important contributions, Sam was chosen as the 2011 Fort McMurray Oil Baron Most Valuable Playoff Performer. He was someone counted on heavily by the coaching staff to play in all types of pressure situations.
The Oil Barons’ organization would like to congratulate Sam and his family and wish him all the best in his future endeavours both academically and athletically. Sam becomes the 6th Fort McMurray Oil Baron to secure a commitment from a post-secondary institution.
