Jared Cockrell Commits to Colgate University

The Brooks Bandits of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) are proud to announce that 1995-born forward Jared Cockrell (Byfield, MA) has committed to attend and play for Colgate University, beginning in the 2016-17 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) hockey season.

Located in Hamilton, New York, the Raiders play in the NCAA’s Division I ECAC Hockey conference, under 23rd-year head coach Don Vaughan. Under Vaughan’s tenure, the Raiders have been in the NCAA tournament three times, won 20 or more games six times, and appeared in the ECAC Hockey tournament 21 times, with him being named ECAC Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2014.

“I am extremely excited to be a part of Colgate’s future,” said Cockrell. “With a great hockey program and strong academics, I am honoured to have the opportunity to go there.

“I would also like to thank the Brooks Bandits organization, as it played a huge role in my development, and helped me pursue my dream of playing Division I hockey,” he added.

Cockrell, 20, joined the Bandits last season after three stellar years with Kents Hill School in Kents Hill, Maine, where he served as team captain and scored 121 points (48 goals, 73 assists) in 80 games.

With the Bandits, Cockrell made an immediate offensive impact, scoring 55 points (25 goals, 30 assists) in 59 games, ranking 10th in the entire AJHL in scoring, 9th in goal scoring and first among all rookie players in both points and goals.

This season, despite missing several games, Cockrell ranks 18th in the AJHL in points with 29 (12 goals, 17 assists) in 23 games, and registered a career and team-high 12-game point streak earlier this season. He ranks second on the Bandits in scoring, and first in points-per-game.

The Bandits would like to congratulate Jared on his commitment, becoming the first Bandit to commit to the Raider program, and look forward to following his continued progress at the next level.

Cockrell’s commitment brings the total number of current Bandits committed to NCAA Division I schools to ten, including:

  • Shane Bear (University of Massachusetts)
  • Kyler Nachtigall (University of Massachusetts)
  • Parker Foo (Union College)
  • Derek Lodermeier (Army)
  • Tristan Thompson (University of Alaska-Fairbanks)
  • Austin Wright (Rochester Institute of Technology)
  • Cale Makar (University of Massachusetts)
  • Jeff Malott (Cornell University)
  • Joe O’Connor (Quinnipiac University)

The Bandits host two home games this weekend; Friday against Spruce Grove, and Saturday on Teddy Bear Toss Night against the Whitecourt Wolverines, with toys thrown on the ice after Brooks’ first goal donated to the Scotiabank Smiles for Christmas program.
