PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOURS FOR MARINKOVIC, SAWYER AND CHARETTE

 

Grande Prairie Storm forward Tomis Marinkovic is the Pizza 73 AJHL Player of the Week after leading the league with 10 points over four games from October 9th-15th, 2023.

Marinkovic (Coquitlam, BC) scored three goals and seven assists in a four-game road trip through Southern Alberta, while earning the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game twice.  The week began with a 5-2 loss in Okotoks and 5-4 loss to Calgary with Tomis recording three assists for the Storm in the opening games.  The final two games of the trip both ended in a 5-4 overtime win for the Storm.  Marinkovic scored a goal and an assist in the win over Canmore and added a five-point (2G, 3A) game in Drumheller the following night.

Marinkovic (2004) is averaging two points per game since joining the Storm from the Western Hockey League (WHL) at the start of October.

The Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week is Ben Charette of the Whitecourt Wolverines.    The 2003-born goaltender posted a 3-0 record and his first AJHL shutout last week.

Charette (Aurora, ON) was awarded as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game on October 9th after allowing just one goal in a 2-1 victory over the Drayton Valley Thunder.  On October 12th, he made 22 saves to record a 3-2 win versus the Olds Grizzlys.  Ben was recognized as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game for a second time on October 15th when he made 26 saves to shutout the Canmore Eagles.

In his second season with the Wolverines, Charette is currently sixth overall in both save percentage (.919%) and goals against average (2.52GAA).

Forward Logan Sawyer is the Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week with a six-point performance in three wins for the Brooks Bandits.

The 2006-born Bandit recorded his second game winning goal of the season on October 9th in a 7-2 win over Fort McMurray and a three-point (2G, 1A) game.  Logan added a goal and an assist in an 8-0 shutout of the Lloydminster Bobcats on October 13th and scored his fourth goal of the week in a 5-3 win over Okotoks.  The impressive goal was selected as the Canalta Hotels AJHL Play of the Week.

With four goals and two assists, Sawyer led all AJHL rookies in scoring last week, and is currently second overall in rookie scoring with 11 points (11G, 4A) in 11 games.   Logan Sawyer (Calgary, AB) is committed to Providence College (NCAA – Div 1).
