Sam Huck commits to Western Michigan University

OKOTOKS, AB (February 4, 2022) – The Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League are thrilled to announce that 2004-born forward Sam Huck (Calgary, AB) has committed to attend and play for Western Michigan University.

Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the WMU Broncos compete in the NCAA’s Division I National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) under first-year head coach Pat Ferschweiler, and are currently ranked fifth in the nation in the USCHO rankings.

“Sam has been a fantastic addition to our program this season and has shown incredible progress since his first few games in Okotoks,” said Oilers head coach and general manager Tyler Deis. “This commitment is reflective of the hard work he has put in over the last few years and is extremely well-deserved.”

Huck, 17, ranks seventh on the Oilers in scoring this season with 25 points (8 goals, 17 assists) in 48 games, his first at the Junior level. Previously, he scored 7 points in 6 games in a shortened 2020-21 season with the U18 AAA Calgary Buffaloes, following up a season in which he scored 23 points in 30 games with the squad.

In 2018-19, Huck scored 56 points (33 goals, 23 assists) in 32 games with the U15 AAA Calgary Bisons, ranking second only to his current Oiler teammate Connor Gourley.

He is the third Oiler to commit to an NCAA Division I school in-season this year, and the sixth overall commit on the team’s roster, joining Bowden Singleton (North Dakota), Rieger Lorenz (Denver), Conyr Hellyer (Arizona State), Connor Gourley (Arizona State), and Tucker McRae (Dartmouth).
