The Fort McMurray Oil Barons are proud to announce that defenceman Spencer Kunz has committed to the SAIT Trojans of the ACAC for the upcoming season.
Kunz suited up in 148 games across four seasons with the Oil Barons, becoming a dependable presence on the blue line and an important leader within the organization.
Originally from Beiseker, Alberta, the 2005 born defenceman first joined the Oil Barons as an affiliated player during the 2022-23 season, appearing in nine games before signing with the organization full-time for the 2023-24 campaign. Prior to joining the MOB, Kunz played for the U18 AAA Airdrie Bisons where he recorded 21 points (8 goals, 13 assists) in 32 games.
“I’m so thankful for the Oil Barons organization and the city of Fort McMurray for being my home for the last three years. I’d like to thank my coaches and teammates for everything they have taught me and for all the memories I’ve made. The lessons I’ve learned and the memories I have made will not only help me at SAIT but will continue to help me succeed for the rest of my life.” said Kunz.
“Over the past three seasons, Kunzy has been an outstanding representative of our program, consistently leading with his relentless compete and work ethic. It has been a privilege to coach him and witness his growth as both a player and a person. We are extremely proud of his accomplishment and look forward to cheering him on as he begins this next chapter with SAIT.” said Oil Barons Head Coach and General Manager Sam Klassen.
Kunz was recognized as the Oil Barons Top Defenceman and Most Defensive Player at the team’s annual awards banquet this season following another strong year on the blue line. He also earned the team’s Most Defensive Player award in 2024-25 and was named Rookie of the Year during the 2023-24 season, highlighting the impact he made from start to finish during his junior career with the MOB.
The Oil Barons would like to congratulate Spencer and his family on this accomplishment and wish him continued success at SAIT.
