Yatsyshin (2004) recorded an assist on January 17th in a 4-3 overtime loss to the visiting Calgary Canucks. On January 18th, he posted a career high three-point game with two goals and an assist in a 6-3 win over the Olds Grizzlys. Yatsyshin (Kyiv, Ukraine) is in his second season with the Thunder and has already passed his point total from last season (15) with 17 points in 31 games played.
The Thunder are 6-2-1-1 in the last ten games and chasing the last playoff spot in the Viterra AJHL South Division.
Casey Black of the Canmore Eagles is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. The 2005-born defenceman extended his three-game point streak with a three-point game last week.
Black (Calgary, AB) was awarded as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game after scoring a goal and two assists in a comeback win over the visiting Drumheller Dragons on the 25th Annual Hockey Day in Canada. Black is averaging over a point per game since rejoining the Eagles at the end of November with 17 points in 15 games played.
The Canmore Eagles are first in the Viterra AJHL South Division and winners of their last three games. Black and the Eagles defensive group have the second fewest goals against (94 GA) in the AJHL this season.
The Inter Pipeline AJHL Rookie of the Week is Pontiacs leading scorer Porter Byrd-Leitner (Colgate University). The rookie forward has recorded nine points in his last seven games, including three points (1G, 2A) in two games last week.
On January 17th, Byrd-Leitner was selected as the Viterra AJHL Player of the Game with a goal and an assist in an 8-2 loss to the Camrose Kodiaks. The following night, he recorded his 18th assist of the season with an assist on the game winner in a 4-2 win over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
Porter Byrd-Leitner (2006) has 25 points (7G, 18A) in 30 games played and is eighth in AJHL rookie scoring.
