Alumni Parayko and Kunyk to Wear ‘A’ for Alaska Nanooks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Head coach Dallas Ferguson and his staff revealed the program's captains for the 2013-14 season Tuesday afternoon following practice at Patty Ice Arena as the Alaska hockey team will be led by senior left wing Colton Beck (Langley, British Columbia/Business Administration).

Joining Beck will be senior center Cody Kunyk (Sherwood Park, Alberta/Business Administration), sophomore defenseman Colyon Parayko (St. Albert, Alberta/Business Administration) and senior defenseman Michael Quinn (Surrey, British Columbia/Geography), as the trio were named assistant captains for the year.

Beck, who was an assistant captain a year ago, finished last season as the third-leading scorer for the Nanooks with 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 games played. Alaska's Central Collegiate Hockey Association Perani Cup point champion, Beck was second in power-play goals (3), game-winning scores (3) and short-handed tallies (1). He notched five multi-point games, including a career-best four on Feb. 8 against Ohio State when he recorded his first ever hat trick.

Kunyk is the top returning scorer from a year ago as he scored 11 goals to go with a team-high 17 helpers in 37 games. He was tied for the team lead with four power-play scores and was responsible for two game winners. He had six multi-point games, including a season-best four on Feb. 8 versus Ohio State, in which he dished out a career-high four assists. He was previously a 2011-12 Second Team All-CCHA selection and was named Alaska's Most Outstanding Male Athlete in that same year.

Parayko, a 2012 NHL third-round draft pick to the St. Louis Blues (86th overall), was recognized on the CCHA All-Rookie Team as an Honorable Mention selection after accruing four goals and 13 assists to tie for sixth on the team in points and tied for first amongst defenders. He blocked 57 shots and ranked 13th in the country among rookie defenders in scoring during 2012-13. He had three multi-point games, including one goal and two helpers in Alaska's 4-2 win on Jan. 26 against Northern Michigan.

Quinn had a solid junior campaign from the blue line as he totaled three goals and 14 assists, which tied for sixth on the team in scoring and matched Parayko's point total for the most by a defenseman. His assist total ranked tied for third and led the squad with 71 blocked shots for the year. He had three multi-point games, including a tie for a career-high with three against Michigan State in the CCHA finale on Feb. 23, in which he had one goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory.
