Atwal Commits to the University of Calgary

Sherwood Park, AB: The Sherwood Park Crusaders are pleased to announce that forward Arjun Atwal (1999) has committed to the University of Calgary (U Sports) for the 2020-21 season.

?Arjun is one of the biggest reasons why our program has made the quick turnaround that it has,? said General Manager Kyle Chase. ?Arjun?s character and leadership on and off the ice have been a valuable piece of this organization?s growth in the last three years.The Dinos have acquired a first rate hockey player and a first class human being. The University of Calgary is a U Sports program that plays in the Canada West Conference. The Dinos are coached by Mark Howell, who has been with the University since 2009. Last season, they finished with a 17-8-3 record and made it to the conference semi finals before being eliminated by the University of Saskatchewan.

Atwal joined the Crusaders in 2016-17 season and played in 163 games over four seasons. The Edmonton native scored 86 goals and 233 points, which is the second most in franchise history. Atwal also found his name in the record books with his 147 assists, which trails only Grant Rezewski on the all-time assists list.

This past season, Atwal was the captain of the Crusaders and finished with 107 points (35 goals, 72 assists) in 54 games, which led the AJHL. On February 26th, Atwal was named the AJHL MVP making him the fifth Crusaders to win the award. He was also named to the Viterra North All-League team alongside his teammates Carter Savoie, Michael Benning and Carter Gylander.

Atwal is the eleventh Crusader to earn a post-secondary commitment, joining Jacob Kendall (Red Deer College), Carter Gylander (Colgate University), Ty Mueller (University of Nebraska-Omaha), Will Zapernick, Jarred White, Jacob Franczak (University of Alabama-Huntsville), Reid Irwin, Carter Savoie, and Michael Benning (University of Denver).
