Bandits Alum Plevy Named Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week

AMHERST, Mass. – Massachusetts hockey freshman forward Austin Plevy (Brooks, AJHL) has been named Hockey East’s Pro Ambitions Co-Rookie of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon. The accolade comes on the heels of the Langley, British Columbia native’s outstanding first weekend of college hockey that saw him tally five points on four goals and one assist to help the Minutemen sweep Colorado College on the road.

Plevy logged both game winners for UMass on the weekend with two of his goals coming on the power play. In his collegiate debut last Friday, Plevy posted a hat trick and an assist for four points, factoring in four of UMass’ six goals in a 6-3 win over the Tigers. He followed up by scoring the game-winning goal with 3:07 remaining in regulation in game two at Colorado College as the Minutemen completed the comeback from a three-goal deficit in the third period.

Plevy and Co-Rookie of the Week honoree Connecticut’s Max Letunov’s hat tricks last Friday night were the first by rookies in their collegiate debuts since Notre Dame’s Anders Lee did so in 2010. Plevy’s hat trick was the first by a Minuteman since Michael Pereira’s vs. Providence on Feb. 11, 2012, at home in the Mullins Center and was the first by a UMass rookie since James Marcou found the back of the Vermont net three times as a freshman on Jan. 25, 2008.

Plevy is currently tied with senior Shane Walsh for the team lead in points though two games and is tied for the national lead in goals scored.

UMass will be back in action next Fri., Oct. 16, when the squad will play host to Sacred Heart for it’s home opener, set for 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
