CANUCKS APPOINT MAT ROBINSON AS HEAD COACH

The Calgary Canucks Junior A Hockey Club is proud to announce the appointment of Mat Robinson as the new Head Coach of the Calgary Canucks.

Robinson brings a wealth of hockey knowledge and leadership experience to the role. A former professional defenseman, he enjoyed a distinguished 13-year career in the KHL, representing Canada internationally, including at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, where he helped secure a bronze medal, and again at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. His reputation as a leader on and off the ice, coupled with his strong commitment to player development, makes him a natural fit to guide the Canucks as they build on their championship legacy.

Supporting Robinson behind the bench will be a strong coaching staff:

  • Brandon Cozen — Associate Coach

Cozen brings elite playing experience and a sharp hockey mind to the Canucks. A former Team Canada Olympian and standout at the IIFIF World Junior U20 Hockey Championships, Cozen combined international experience with a successful NHL and professional hockey career. He has successfully transitioned into coaching and has been instrumental in advancing players to higher levels of the game. His knowledge of the league, leadership qualities, and dedication to mentorship are invaluable assets to the Canucks’ program.

  • Riley Hearn — Assistant Coach

Hearn’s coaching background is rooted in technical development and creating a strong team culture. With national championship experience coaching and playing for the Canucks, he has demonstrated a proven ability to prepare players for success both on and off the ice. His energy and attention to detail strengthen the Canucks’ bench leadership.

  • Mike Bergen — Goaltending Coach

Bergen is widely respected for his specialized work with goaltenders. With years of experience mentoring goalies at the junior and collegiate levels, he brings the technical expertise and individualized training necessary to maximize performance in the crease. His guidance has consistently helped goaltenders progress to the next stage of their careers.

The Calgary Canucks also wish to take this opportunity to thank Jay Pylypuik for his contributions to the hockey club. The organization is grateful for his efforts and extends best wishes for his future endeavors.

“With Mat’s international playing career, leadership qualities, and commitment to developing players, we are confident he will guide our program to even greater heights,” said General Manager Ryan Rarick. “With Brandon, Riley, and Mike rounding out a strong staff, the Canucks are well-positioned for continued success.”

The Calgary Canucks look forward to the upcoming season under this dynamic coaching team and to continuing their mission of developing elite players while strengthening community pride in junior hockey.
