Canucks Celebrate 40th Anniversary

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of The Calgary Canucks Junior “A” Hockey Club. To celebrate this
important milestone the Calgary Canucks will host their 40th Anniversary Wall of Fame Game on
Saturday February, 11 2012 at Max Bell Centre versus The Grande Prairie Storm, in benefit of the Calgary
Interfaith Food Bank.
The Calgary Canucks began operations in 1971. With 11 regular season championships, 34 consecutive
years in the playoffs, culminating in a Canadian Championship in 1995, they are both the winningest and
oldest team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and perhaps one of the most storied franchises in all of
Canadian Junior “A” hockey history. Over 200 Calgary Canucks have received hockey scholarships to
attend more than 50 different Canadian and American universities and colleges – including; The
University of Calgary; Mount Royal University; SAIT; Harvard; Princeton; and Yale. And 42 have gone to
play in the NHL – including Mike Vernon, Dany Heatley, Jason Smith, and Craig Adams, among others.
To celebrate this record we will be honoring Robin Laycock, who played for the Calgary Canucks from
1976-1978, as the first player to be admitted to the Calgary Canucks Wall of Fame. Robin won the AJHL
Scoring Race in 1977‐78 with 80 goals and 77 assists in 58 games and scoring 50 goals in 37 games –
beating such notables that season as Mark Messier, Duane Sutter, Brent Sutter, Troy Murray and Kelly
Kisio. Those 80 goals still stand as the all‐time AJHL single season goal record. Robin went on to play
professionally in Europe for six seasons and also toiled for the University of Calgary where he won a
Canada West scoring championship with the Dinosaurs. Robin graduated with a BPE, BEd, and a
Masters degree in Educational Research from the University of Calgary, earning scholarships from both
Hockey Canada and the Calgary Canucks. Today, Robin is the Principal of John Ware School in Calgary.
The Calgary Canucks, World Professional Chuckwagon Association and Calgary Stampede Centennial
have also teamed up to raise food and cash donations for the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. Watch
miniature chuckwagons race around the ice with drivers from the World Professional Chuckwagon
Association and Atom hockey players as their horses.
Some lucky fan will receive a chance to win a 2012 GMC Sierra Crew Cab – Diamond Edition. Every
food donation gives a fan an additional chance to win. The more items you donate – the greater your
chances to win. Tickets available at the door.
