The Okotoks Oilers of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) are thrilled to announce that 2004-born forward Jagger Tapper (Calgary, AB) has committed to attend and play for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI).
Located in Troy, New York, the Engineers play in the NCAA’s Division I ECAC Hockey division, under 4th-year head coach Dave Smith.
“We couldn’t be happier for Jagger to start off his rookie season committing to an excellent program,” said Oilers head coach and GM Tyler Deis. “For some time we’ve known Jagger has the potential to be a significant impact player at this level, and we’re looking forward to helping him develop into the kind of player who will impact RPI just as much.”
Tapper, 17, is coming off a stellar season with the U18 AAA Calgary Flames, with whom he captured the Most Valuable Player award for the Alberta Elite Hockey League, leading the league in scoring with 51 points (20 goals, 31 assists) in 35 games.
He also appeared in 5 games with the Oilers as an affiliate player, scoring his first Junior A goal in the process in October against the Camrose Kodiaks at home.
So far in the 2022 preseason, he has recorded 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist) in 3 games.
Tapper is the fourth player on the current 2022-23 Oilers roster committed to an NCAA Division I postsecondary institution, joining fellow forwards Conyr Hellyer (Okotoks, AB) and Connor Gourley (Calgary, AB), who are committed to Arizona State University, and Sam Huck (Calgary, AB), who is committed to Western Michigan University.
The Oilers finish off their preseason on Sunday afternoon hosting the BCHL’s Cranbrook Bucks at 4:15 PM. Tickets are available online at tickets.okotoksoilers.ca.
