The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have hired Tyler King as their new Manager of Communications, the team announced today.
King assumes the newly-created role after three years in Fort McMurray media, as a News Anchor, then Assistant Program Director, then Program Director with Rogers Broadcasting, while also handling Oil Barons radio broadcasts for the past three seasons, beginning with the team’s trip to Omsk, Russia in the summer of 2011.
In his new position, King will continue to call the play-by-play of Oil Barons games on the team’s new radio home, KAOS 91.1, while also coordinating and facilitating relationships with local media, preparing and issuing media releases, creating content for and maintaining the team’s website, scripting game-day operations, producing video features and other multimedia, helping to coordinate player appearances and public relations, as well as other responsibilities in the lead-up to the team’s hosting of the Western Canada Cup in 2015.
Prior to arriving in Fort McMurray to broadcast Oil Barons games, King spent two seasons with the Kingston Voyageurs of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, one season as an intern with the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League, as well as multiple years on both television and radio at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) and Ontario Hockey League (OHL) levels.
He received a Master of Science in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from Syracuse University in 2010, as well as a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) from Queen’s University in 2009, receiving the annual Student Award from the Canadian chapter of the International Sports Press Association in mid-2009.
