Spruce Grove, AB – The Whitecourt Wolverines fell 4-3 in game 2 of their North Division Final series against the Spruce Grove Saints.
The Saints got off to a quick start as just under four minutes into the opening frame, captain Josh Harris deposited a rebound goal on a power play. After a slow start, the Wolverines got their legs under them throughout the first period but continued to trail at the intermission.
In the second period, the Saints increased their lead with another quick goal, this time Logan Ganie stepped over the Wolverine line with speed and zipped a quick wrist shot off the post and in. The Wolverines answered back midway through the second period, just after killing off a Saint power play, Stevie Bryant skated onto a loose puck in the neutral zone and sped into the left-wing circle where he snapped a shot five-hole on Saint's starting goalie Nolan Kent. The Saints restored their two-goal lead two and a half minutes later as Chris Van Os-Shaw pinballed in a power play goal and then less than two minutes later, Van Os-Shaw increased the Saint's lead to 4-1 after he was set up for a backdoor tap-in by Nick Leyer. Before the period was out, the Wolverines would gain back some momentum as Tanner Foster went top-shelf with a shot from the slot on a Wolverine 5-on-3 power play.
The Wolverines pressed in the third period but could not pull back to within a goal until less than 10 seconds left when Ryan Grant snapped home a point shot but it was too little too late.
Game 3 of the North Division Final goes Monday night in Whitecourt at 7:30 p.m.
