14 AJHL Players Receive Invite to World Junior A Challenge Selection Camp

Working in partnership with Hockey Canada, the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) has extended invitations to 100 players from across the country to selection camps in advance of the 2016 World Junior A Challenge.  In Leduc, Alberta 60 players will gather from December 5th-8th to take part in intrasquad games and practices in the hopes of cracking Team Canada West’s final line-up.

A total of 14 AJHL players representing nine teams were selected, including three of the seven goaltenders vying for a spot on Team West.  Three of the 14 AJHL selections are on the 2017 NHL Central Scouting Watch List: Cale Makar (Brooks Bandits), Ian Mitchell (Spruce Grove Saints), and Jarrod Gourley (Spruce Grove Saints).  In 2015, 11 AJHL players won gold as members of Team Canada West alongside Head Coach Tim Fragle (Sherwood Park Crusaders).

“Coaches from all five leagues representing Team Canada West assisted in identifying players which will make for a fast-paced, very competitive selection camp,” said Trevor Alto (White Rock, BC / BCHL), director of operations for Team Canada West. “The focus is on competition for the 22 roster spots; however, the staff is dedicated to providing each invitee every opportunity to not only put their best foot forward, but to also enjoy the opportunity to represent Team Canada West.”

The 2016 World Junior A Challenge will be held in the AJHL community of Bonnyville, Alberta from December 11th – 17th at the R.J. Lalonde Arena.
