Ever heard of the Edmonton Safeway Canadians, the Edmonton Maple Leafs, the Calgary Cowboys, Calgary Buffaloes or Lethbridge Sugar Kings?
If you were around hockey arenas in 1963, you probably would recognize those names as the five original Alberta Junior Hockey League teams.
When pucks were dropped around the league on Sept. 6, the AJHL entered its 50th season. Every player will wear a patch on their jerseys to commemorate the league’s golden anniversary.
There are also special events planned throughout the season, including Scotiabank’s Hockey Day in Canada 2014 on CBC, which will be hosted on Jan. 18 from Lloydminster, the home of the AJHL’s Bobcats.
