Brooks Bandits forward Randy Hernández has been selected as the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week for the fourth time in the 2019-20 season. In three games from February 3rd- 9th, he scored 5 goals and 5 assists for the Bandits.
Randy Hernández scored 2 goals and an assist on February 4th, but the Bandits fell just short in a 5-4 loss to the Canmore Eagles. A 4-point performance by Hernández on February 7th, led his team to a 8-4 victory over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, which included 2 goals and 2 assists. Hernández and the Bandits continued their winning ways the following night with a 4-3 win versus the Whitecourt Wolverines, and a 3-point game for the AJHL veteran. Randy Hernández added an assist on both game winning goals versus the North Division opponents and earned his 11th Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award against the Wolverines.
Randy Hernández, 20, leads the Bandits in scoring and is second in the AJHL Scoring Race with 40 goals, 48 assists and 88 points. He is committed to Robert Morris University (NCAA Division I) for the 2020-2021 season.
The Brooks Bandits are second in the Viterra AJHL South Division with six regular season games remaining.
Adam Sandstrom of the Whitecourt Wolverines led all AJHL defencemen in scoring last week and is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week. Sandstrom has also opened the week as a finalist for the AJHL?s Outstanding Defenceman Award.
Sandstrom (Red Deer, AB) picked up 5 points (1G, 4A) when the Wolverines traveled South for four games last week. The 20 year-old defenceman recorded an assist in two mid-week games versus the Camrose Kodiaks and Olds Grizzlys. He followed up with 2 assists in Friday night?s victory over the Calgary Canucks and a goal in a 4-3 loss to the Brooks Bandits on Saturday. Sandstrom was awarded as the Viterra AJHL Star of the Game versus Brooks. The Wolverines returned home with a 2-2 record on the week and third in the Viterra AJHL North Division standings.
The three-year AJHL vet and team captain is on a six-game point streak, totaling 7 points, and is 6th in scoring among AJHL defencemen with 33 points (9G, 24A).
