Cole, Davis and Howe Earn Final Player of the Week Awards

The final Inter Pipeline AJHL Player of the Week for the 2020-21 season is Owen Cole of the Brooks Bandits.   With 7 points in three games last week, the Bandit forward led all AJHL skaters on the scoreboard.

Owen Cole (Dunnville, ON) opened the scoring on Friday night in the first of three straight games versus the Spruce Grove Saints.   The Bandits dropped the first game of the weekend 4-3 to the Saints before rallying back with two consecutive wins.   Cole recorded 4 assists in Saturday’s 9-3 victory and 2 assists in Sunday’s 6-1 win, including an assist on the eventual game winner.

Cole concluded the season tied for fourth in team scoring with teammate Brayden Krieger and sixth overall in the AJHL with 23 points (6G, 17A) in 20 games.   The NCAA Division I UMass-Lowell commit ended the year on a 5-game point streak totaling 11 points.

The Brooks Bandits held an 18-2 regular season record with the highest win percentage in the AJHL at .900.

Grande Prairie Storm goaltender Joe Howe is the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Defensive Player of the Week.   The 19 year-old recorded his first AJHL shutout and posted a 2-0 weekend record to wrap up the 2020-21 campaign.

In two consecutive games versus the Sherwood Park Crusaders, Howe turned away 57 of 58 shots on goal to steal two wins for the Storm.     Howe, 19, earned his second Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award to commemorate the 1-0 shutout on Friday night in a 30-save game.  

Howe (Barrie, ON) posted wins in his last four games of the season and concluded with a record of 7-3 in the regular season with a 2.27 GAA.   He will attend Cornell University for the 2021-22 NCAA Division I season.

For the second time in the 2020-21 season, Jayden Davis of the Spruce Grove Saints has been selected as the Merit Contractors AJHL Rookie of the Week.   The 18 year-old forward scored 3 goals and 3 assists in three games versus the Brooks Bandits from May 7th – 9th, 2021.

On Friday, Davis had a hand in each of the Saints goals with 2 goals and 2 assists during a 4-3 win over the Bandits.   The native of Calgary, AB received his fourth Viterra AJHL Star of the Game award for his career-high 4-point night.   On Saturday, Davis added a goal and an assist in a 9-3 loss to the Bandits.

Davis earned a spot in the Top 20 AJHL Scorers with 15 points (9G, 6A) over 16 games.   The Saints played the most games of all AJHL teams in 2020-21 with 21 regular season games.
