Former Okotoks Oiler Wins NCAA Championship

How many former Okotoks Oilers can say they have won a Division 1 NCAA Championship as a freshman?

Rhett Gardner can.

The former Okotoks Oilers Forward and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks crushed the Quinnipiac Bobcats 5-1 in Saturday nights match up in Tampa, Florida, winning the championship title.

It was a neck in neck battle during the first two periods, entering the third the Fighting Hawks were up 2-1.

Though trailing Quinnipiac still had hopes of claiming their first ever title until Senior Forward Drake Caggiula scored not once, but twice in the opening four minutes of the third.

The Fighting Hawks would score one more before the end of the game securing their eighth NCAA championship title, putting them only one behind Michigan for the most overall in men's college hockey history.

The title would be Rhett Gardner's first NCAA championship, and as a freshman a chance to have a couple more under his belt by the time his college career comes to an end.
